The recent Ebola outbreak forced medical science to evolve as quickly as the virus. From antibiotics and vaccines to computer programs, new lifesaving tools that will be used to fight viruses in the near future.

In September 2014, a 42-year-old Liberian visitor named Thomas Eric Duncan, became the first diagnosed U.S. case of Ebola, a virus that already had taken the lives of thousands of people in West Africa, which typically kills half and sometimes as many as 90 percent of those infected.

“No nation is immune to the growing global threat that can be posed by an isolated outbreak of infectious disease in a seemingly remote part of the world.”
