Giving Your Mind Over to the Herd!?

We've talked about this before, but its still something that bothers me and I feel like it could lead to the next civil crisis in the U.S. (Sounds a bit extreme but it's not impossible!!)
This herd mentality that we are so prone to accepting, following the group and just believing for the sake of believing, never questioning and anyone who doesn't follow or believe is obviously a nutcase.
We're so afraid of the "Outsider", the unknown breaking in...the herd mentality it can easily turn into Mob Mentality, it doesnt take much at all for that to happen. And that's whats scary, I feel like we are on the threshold of that happening, I'm talking about the "Vaccine Wars", and all the Scare Tactics used for both sides are making it worse! I feel like it's making it harder and harder to have a rational conversation and to try to get to the truth!
Instead of demanding that our Government gives us all the proof we need one way or another so as to squash this arguement, instead of trying to find a way to create ways to build a knowledge base so as to teach the truth, whether its "Pro-Vax" or "Anti-Vax".
We continue to draw the line in the sand and choose sides and then throw rocks at the other side, it's like we really need to be in conflict for some reason?
People dwell in fear, and advertisers and merchandising companies know this very well!!! It doesn't take much to scare people into doing something outside of the norm, now convincing a person may be a bit more difficult, but people as a whole it's not hard at all.
i.e: Twilight Zone Episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" 1960
"Strange happenings drive ordinary neighbors into a frenzy of suspicion."
Serling takes on Mob Psychology in this cautionary tale about an ordinary American neighborhood with average looking people (a well-chosen cast for that effect), going about normal activities. An unusual noise followed by mysterious electrical stoppage soon has these same normal families in the street looking for those among them who may be disguised space monsters. First one neighbor falls under suspicion, then another, as the most innocent daily activites suddenly become suspicios in the climate of fear, which is probably the most unnerving part of the story. The script does a good job showing how the most ordinary pursuits can be reinterpreted as sinister undertakings once Mob Psychology takes over.
This is a short episode (30 min), but it is flawless in portraying the truth about how people can tear themselves apart when fear and panic set in. Pay close attention to the ending - it is a statement of the human condition that still rings true today.
There is an old adage which says, "Throw ten people in a room together and they may not pick a leader but they'll damn sure pick someone to hate."
I hope that we can eventually, (hopefully sooner than later) recognize the problem that we have as a whole and then we can begin to make a change, by now we should be able to do this!
Everyone always says how far we've come from our ancestor's but I feel like we've barley moved an inch, we're still children with big toys. -rkd
